We love microweddings. Without the circus of a 200-person reception, we get time — time for real portraits, time for the light, time for you to actually talk to every person who came. Here is what we tell couples planning one.
Pick the place like it is a portrait background
With a big wedding, the venue is logistics. With a microwedding, the venue is the co-star — it is in half your photos. That is an argument for character over convenience: a garden in The Woodlands, a family property outside Tomball, a chapel in Montgomery County. Somewhere with texture. When there are 20 guests instead of 200, every corner of the venue ends up in the album.
One practical note: check permits if you are thinking about a public park or nature area. Some spots in Montgomery County require one for professional photography, some do not. Ask before you assume — we will help you check.
The timeline is your superpower
Big weddings run on fear: fear the cocktail hour empties, fear grandma gets tired, fear the timeline slips. A microwedding runs on whatever you want. Want portraits at golden hour and dinner at sunset? Done. Want to spend an hour wandering with just the two of you while your guests have cocktails? Done. The smaller the wedding, the more the day can bend around the light instead of the other way around.
Our advice: build the day backward from sunset. Portraits in the best light, dinner after, and nothing scheduled during the golden hour except being married and photogenic.
Spend the savings where the camera sees it
Microweddings cost less — that is math. The couples who get the most out of it redirect the savings into the things that show up in photos and memory: better flowers, a great meal for 20 instead of a mediocre one for 200, a great photographer (hello). Nobody remembers the chair covers. Everybody remembers the food and the photos.
Tell your photographer everything
With a small wedding, there is no coordinator running interference — it is usually just you, us, and whoever is officiating. So over-communicate: the timeline, the must-have shots, the family dynamics (every family has them). We scout locations with couples all the time. Send us your ideas and we will tell you honestly what works at 5 p.m. in July versus 4 p.m. in November.
Elopement vs. microwedding: the real difference
Elopement: just you two (plus us and an officiant), anywhere you want. Microwedding: your favorite 20 to 30 people, one location, dinner together after. Both are intimate. The elopement is a secret; the microwedding is a dinner party where you happen to get married. Pick the energy you want, not the label.
