Location planning

Where we photograph in and around Huntsville

Huntsville offers Lake Raven and piney woods at the state park, the 1840s homes of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, and the SHSU campus for senior portraits. The state park needs a permit 90 days ahead, so for short notice we plan around the museum grounds and downtown instead.

Sam Houston Memorial Museum grounds

1836 Sam Houston Ave

Best for: Couples, engagements, family portraits, and seniors

15 acres with the 1847 Woodland Home, the 1858 Steamboat House, cabins, a duck pond, and big oaks. Real historic character with no 90-day permit gate.

Timing:
Late afternoon; the heavy shade keeps light soft. Closed Mondays.

Huntsville State Park

565 Park Road 40 W

Best for: Families, SHSU seniors, engagements, and couples

2,083 acres around Lake Raven with more than 21 miles of trails. Alligators live here, so we keep small kids back from the water.

Timing:
Golden hour at the lake.
Permits:
Huntsville State Park requires a commercial photography permit from Texas Parks & Wildlife, filed at least 90 days ahead, so we only book it with the permit in hand.

SHSU campus

Sam Houston Ave corridor

Best for: Senior and graduation portraits and alumni engagements

Historic architecture and tree-lined walks.

Avenue M and University Ave

Best for: Seniors, branding headshots, and couples

Brick streets, small-town storefronts, and a courthouse-square feel.

Timing:
Golden hour.

Eastham-Thomason Park

1500 7th St

Best for: Families, kids, and casual sessions

A sprawling downtown park with trails, a creek, and painted-bridge artwork.

Timing:
Morning or golden hour.

Kate Barr Ross Memorial Park

486 TX-75 N

Best for: Quick family sessions and kids

A gazebo and octagonal pavilion give built-in anchors for posed shots. Sports leagues own the evenings, so we book weekday daytime.
